چکیده

Mikania micrantha H.B.K is an invasive alien weed in South China. To help understand the mechanisms of its invasiveness, we studied its seed germination ecophysiology. We found that the optimal temperatures for seed germination were 25, 30, 15/30°C (night/day), and an ambient temperature (24-32°C). Germination percentage (GP) in dark was less than 10%, and it increased with increasing light intensity up to 700 lx. However, GP and germination index (GI) did not change significantly when light was more than 700 and 550 lx, respectively. Germination was enhanced by white, yellow and red light more than far-red, blue, and green light. Light sensitivity and germination of seeds increased with increasing dark incubation time. Newly ripened seeds exhibited innate dormancy that was released by a two-month after-ripening period in dry storage. Except at a storage temperature of -5°C, seed GP decreased when storage time exceeded the after-ripening period, and this decrease was more pronounced from a storage temperature of 4°C to 15°C to ambient 24-32°C. Percentage seedling emergence was lower and slower when seeds were covered deeper in soil, and no emergence occurred when seeds were buried at 1.5 and 1.75 cm in clayey and sandy soil, respectively. With increased soil moisture content (MC) from 8% to about 20%, seedling emergence became increased and quickened. However, an MC greater than 23% reduced emergence. These responses of seed germination to various treatments indicate that this weed is well adapted to environments in South China.

Screening Allelochemical-Resistant Species of the Alien Invasive Mikania micrantha for Restoration in South China

To screen allelochemical-resistant species of the alien invasive weed Mikania micrantha, we studied the allelopathic inhibition effects of the leaf aqueous extract (LAE) of Mikania on seed germination and seedling growth of the 26 species native or naturalized in the invaded region in South China. Seed germination was more strongly negatively affected by LAE than seedling growth. Responses of s...

Harmful effects and chemical control study of Mikania micrantha H.B.K in Yunnan, Southwest China

Invasive alien species Mikania micrantha, which originated from Central and South America, has spread quickly and become one of the most seriously invasive weedy species in Yunnan Province, Southwest of China. The harmful effects of this plant on major cash crops and local plant communities have been surveyed in 50 townships of 6 counties of Yunnan Province since 2006. Moreover, bioactivity and...

energetic cost of leaf construction in the invasive weed Mikania micrantha H.B.K. and its co-occurring species: implications for invasiveness

Construction cost (CC) is a quantifiable measure of energy demand for biomass production and is related to energy-use efficiency. Low construction cost was hypothesized to give invaders a growth advantage by utilizing energy efficiently. The present study examines the energetic cost of leaf construction in the invasive weed Mikania micrantha H.B.K. and its five common co-occurring species (Ager...

Allelopathic effects of Chromolaena odorata (L.) King & Robinson and Mikania micrantha H.B.K. on three selected weed species

The use of chemical pesticides leads to negative impacts such as pesticide residue problem and weed resistance. Thus, an economical and environmentally safe method such as allelopathy needs to be explored for controlling weeds in agricultural areas. Therefore, a study was conducted to determine the allelopathic effects of the aqueous leaf extract and leaf debris (incorporated into the soil) of ...

Regeneration Capacity of Small Clonal Fragments of the Invasive Mikania micrantha H.B.K.: Effects of Burial Depth and Stolon Internode Length

The perennial stoloniferous herbaceous vine Mikania micrantha H.B.K. is among the most noxious exotic invaders in China and the world. Disturbance can fragment stolons of M. micrantha and disperse these fragments over long distances or bury them in soils at different depths. To test their regeneration capacity, single-node stolon fragments with stolon internode lengths of 0, 3, 6 and 12 cm were...
